SARAH MALDOROR. KONTEXT

Coorganised by Kinothek Asta Nielsen e.V.
Curated by Annouchka de Andrade, Esra Kartal, Feven Haile and Gaby Babić

As the first comprehensive Berlin retrospective on Sarah Maldoror (1929-2020), the program invites you to get to know the life and work of this important pioneer of African and Afro-diasporic cinema. With over 40 films to her name, Maldoror remained, until recently, virtually unknown to the public. Through a mixture of films, music and discussions with invited guests, the program revolves around the central topoi of Maldoror's film practice: African liberation movements, the role of women, histories of slavery and colonialism, artists, especially surrealists, and négritude. Sarah Maldoror's revolutionary-decolonial work is contextualized in the post-migrant and diasporic present through Berlin associations, initiatives and university seminars. Sarah Maldoror. Kontext was curated in close collaboration with Maldoror's daughter, Annouchka de Andrade, who is working to preserve and share her mother's work. This is the first of a two part program which will continue in autumn/winter 2024. (GB)
