نو - روز, NOWRUZ, A NEW DAY

Curated by Afsun Moshiry in collaboration with QueerBerg Collective

Nowruz is a Persian word and means ‘new day’. It consists of two parts ‘now’ (new) and ‘ruz’ (day). Nowruz is the name of the New Year celebration. It begins on the day of the spring equinox, which usually falls on 20 or 21 March each year. The New Year is celebrated in many parts of Central and West Asia.

Given the socio-political moment we live in, the longing for a new day grows ever stronger.

A new day in togetherness.
A new day in public affairs.

This three-day Nowruz programme will be dedicated to the resilience of marginalised communities that are raising their voices for a NEW DAY. The three-day programme, which will resonate with hope and transformation, will feature the work of filmmakers, performers and queer communities. On the 20th, the remarkable Afghan female filmmaker Shahrbanoo Sadat's film, The Orphanage, will be screened. On the 21st of March, the programme will feature a screening of the Mother trilogy of Hoda Taheri and Boris Hadja films Mother Prays All Day Long, Engaar Madaram Geriste Bud, and Mother Is a Natural Sinner, followed by a talk and social gathering, which will include Iranian meze and drinks, as well as a Nowruz fire in the garden. The program will conclude with Queerberg Collective presents Nowruz! a celebratory evening of film, drag, dance, and music hosted by renowned BiPOC collective Queerberg. (AM)
