July Jung, South Korea 2022, 134 Min., Korean with English subtitles

Followed by a panel talk Migrant Women and Labor, 'Who Am I and Where Am I? curated by a.k.a Filmfestival

As part of a school program, young Sohee begins her first job at a telecommunications call center. What is presented to her as a golden opportunity soon turns into a relentless ordeal. Overpowered by the crushing pressure to constantly attain performance targets, Sohee desperately searches for a way to escape which leads to tragic consequences. Police officer Yoo-jin takes on the case, uncovering a harrowing reality. Director July Jung delves deep into the harsh working conditions of South Korea, exposing a system where corporations bypass labor rights through subcontractors and where promised rewards heighten pressure on workers but are never delivered. Women, in particular, face systemic violence in the form of harassment and coercion. With unflinching precision and profound empathy for its protagonist, Next Sohee unravels a tightly woven web of societal oppression—until no one can deny their share of responsibility.

After the film was released, a law protecting the human rights of trainees was enacted in South Korea: it is named the Sohee Law. (BH)
