Do we work to live, or live to work? As the cracks in the systems which underpin late stage capitalist ideology become ever more apparent, many of us are asking ourselves about the role work plays in our lives, both politically and personally. Feminist filmmakers have long interrogated the conditions of labour through their practice, using cinema to question the double standards and gendered injustices that many women face in the workplace. These films offer bleak insights into the impossible conditions faced by many women workers and put forth a clear argument for work as a fundamental feminist issue. Through their depictions of women-led resistance, via large-scale collective action, small acts of rebellion, or simply through the empowering act of sharing these stories, these films also offer glimpses of hope.
