In her directorial debut, Kurdwin Ayub turns her own lived experiences into the dynamic story of Yesmin, a 17-year-old Kurdish girl living in a housing estate in Vienna. Yesmin’s fragile sense of self is thrown into turmoil when a video she makes with her friends goes viral. Eschewing stereotypical depictions of femininity and rebellion, Ayub reframes the adolescent Muslim experience whilst dealing with universal questions of how social media is shaping young people's identities. Careful cinematography merges with mobile phone footage, ensuring the viewer behind the lens of the phone camera remains continually present. Sonne is a vulnerable and impressive feature debut depicting the nuances of life in the diaspora.
