The Color of Pomegranates
Sergei Parajanov, USSR 1969, 73 Min., Armenian, Georgian, Azerbaijani with English subtitles
Followed by a talk with Dr. Gevorg Avetikyan and Lisabona Rahman

As part of the Beyond the Shadows program at the Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin, celebrating the centennial of Sergei Parajanov, we are proud to present a restored version of his masterpiece, The Color of Pomegranates (1968; 2014 restoration, carried out by Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation), a film that consistently ranks among the greatest films of all time. The Color of Pomegranates tells the story of Armenian poet Sayat-Nova from childhood to death, reflecting his spiritual journey, artistic achievements, and internal conflicts. Through visually stunning stills and a poetic narrative, Parajanov crafts a portrait of Sayat-Nova as a master of mystification who fell into his own traps. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with experts exploring the film’s legacy, Parajanov's influence on world cinema, and the restoration process that brings this masterpiece to new life.
