Castillo y el Armado
Pedro Harres, Brazil, 2014, 14 Min., Spanish with English subs, digital
The fictional town of Bacurau is hit by a series of extraordinary events that threaten its existence and the lives of its inhabitants. UFO’s, the disappearance from geolocation systems, the loss of access to water due to corrupt infrastructure projects, and a group of armed hunters from the US intent on exterminating everyone in the town. Through self-organization and determination, the impoverished inhabitants of rural Bacurau unite to resist all threats by collectively confronting their adversaries. Bacurau depicts this anti-colonial struggle using the aesthetics and narrative techniques of classic US westerns, resulting in a gripping film, with strong socio-political commentary, that has caused more than one cheer during its screenings.
