To believe or not to believe would initially appear to be the question of The Great Yawn of History. The film follows the journey of Beitollah, a religious man, who recruits the young disoriented orphan Shojah in an unusual manner to help him find a treasure hidden in a cave.
The parable-like structure of the plot mesmerizes with the idea of fanaticism and what it means to blindly follow a spiral of empty hopes and promises. In the tradition of Iranian cinema which allows social criticism in the form of allegory, Aliyar Rasti fragments the Iranian status quo in a stunning, painterly work of cinema. The film's hypnotic score, composed by Ava Rasti, will be performed live acoustically after the screening. (AM)
