Welcome to the Bamboo Spaceship by Ming Wong

As part of the project Scenes of (Un-)translatability, Ming Wong will introduce Bamboo Theatre by Hong Kong filmmaker Cheung Cheuk which documents the centuries-old ritual performance of Cantonese Opera in itinerant, temporary Bamboo stages. These traditional structures are the inspiration for the artist's ongoing project "Tales from the Bamboo Spaceship" - a science fiction opera inspired by the trans-Pacific travels of Chinese opera troupes shuttling between Hong Kong and California, and the influence of Hollywood cinema on Cantonese opera. The artist will speak about the film and his artistic exploration between film, performance and theatrical intervention. (MW)
