Exiltibeter zwischen zwei Kulturen / Tibetans in Exile between two Cultures
Vadim Jendreyko & Tashi Tsering, Switzerland 1986, 65 min. OV with German subtitles
Tibetans in Exile between two Cultures deals with the realities of life for Tibetans who fled to Switzerland in the 1960s. Twenty-five years later, Vadim Jendreyko and Tashi Tsering portray individual protagonists and take a documentary look at the everyday life of Tibetans, between factory work, religious practice and family life. In the course of the film, differences between the generations become visible: Within the community, views of life shaped by different socializations meet. This film project, which is unique for the exiled Tibetan community, illuminates the intergenerational experience of migration in an intimate way, shaped by the co-direction of the young Tibetan exile, Tashi Tsering. Tschuedok is a haunting meditation on the relationship between expectations and reality from the perspective of Tibetan children growing up bilingually in Switzerland. In terms of content, Tschuedok's similarity to the film Exile Tibetan Between Two Cultures, made thirty-six years earlier, is striking and refreshing. Together, the two films create a connection between then and now. (TH&LM)
