3rd Indie Chinese Cinema Week Opening
Followed by an opening reception at 22:30 with a DJ set.
The fourth feature from the one and only JIA Zhangke, The World explores the ennui and anomie of a globalizing China at the millennium through stories set in a theme park on the fringes of Beijing. Amidst this artificial paradise, where replicas of iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower attract tourists, the park’s workers—a floating population from across and beyond China—grapple with the complex dynamics of human connection and detachment. Blending his signature long takes with surrealist animation, this underappreciated gem from Jia offers an intriguing and sophisticated portrait of China in flux. (CL)
