TAHANGUENTAR is a sound performance that emerged from the research we have been conducting since 2020 as ‘Jendela Sonorama’. We are particularly interested in how two so-called ‘national rhythms’, samba and jaipong, have become part of a fabricated and fragmented notion of ‘national identity’ in Brazil and Indonesia, respectively. TAHANGUENTAR (a portmanteau of Bahasa Indonesia and Portuguese words meaning ‘endurance’) develops this idea into a choreographed sound and visual performance that mixes elements of cinematographic dramaturgy with musical improvisation, dance, and archival research.
