Indonesia's pre-colonial visual history is eclipsed by the legacy of modernism brought by colonialism. Knowledge about magnificent ancient Hindu-Buddhist temples has become a vague collective memory. This film investigates the remains of temples that are spread at high elevation in active volcanic clusters in Central Java; how they came to be and how they have been interpreted since their discovery. Here, the past and the present intertwine with the mist that shrouds 1000 years of human civilization and the temples reveal an ongoing symbiosis with the Mountain Gods of ancient times. Whether through science or mysticism, how do people try to connect with them today?
