Souleymane Cissé, Mali, Burkina Faso, France 1987, 106 Min., OV with English subs

Preceded by an introduction from Kantarama Gahigiri, Maisha Maene & Adyam Tesfamariam, and followed by a performance by Astan KA, Binghi & Exocé Existe and a DJ set by Rafush

A political fable that recalls the initiatory journey of a son and the pursuit of his father, a journey between dark and light, a tale of generational conflict threaded into a tapestry of mythology. In his interwoven world of spirituality, land and consciousness, Cissé manages to dissolve Western boundaries of inner and outer humanity, past and present, borrowing instead the circular form of the oral tale in a language that is utterly his own.
