Borrowing its title from Brandon LaBelle’s eponymous book, this program highlights the idea of sound as an access point to agency; a means of finding new social formations and creatively negotiating systems of domination. Pacific Club tells the story of the first Parisian nightclub for Arabs from the suburbs, whose dreams of integrating into France soon got wiped out by adversities. Heavy metal becomes a lifeline for characters in Border Farce, a short film reflecting on Australia’s cruel policies of refugee detention and the creative ways of resisting the conditions of incarceration. In Sonic Reverbs, Berlin-based musicians surprise their friends or relatives with a song, triggering deep mutual appreciation and conversations about their marginalized kinship. (AL)
