Apply until 15 November through the google form, the participants will be selected and informed by the workshop organizers
Led by renowned filmmaker duoNazlı Kaya andTomáš Doruška you’ll learn the ins and outs of combining animation and documentary filmmaking. This is a hands-on experience where you'll gain practical filmmaking and stopmotion animation skills and techniques.
Taking place over 4.5 days, the workshop will introduce documentary filmmakers, animators, illustrators, photographers and artists in general to techniques of creating authentic documentary footage with the help of animation. To inspire, a special selection of shorts that use analogue techniques in unique ways will be screened. There will also be a demonstration on basic 2D animation and how to achieve proper timing.
Participants are encouraged to bring their ideas for films that focus on social justice, politics, gender, ecology, and environmental themes. There will be a pitching session where we will discuss your ideas for mini-shorts; 3 ideas will finally be chosen to be realized. If you do not have an idea to present, you are still welcome to attend. Using simple drawing and painting techniques in combination with cut-out animation you will have the opportunity to animate directly onto printed frames of documentary footage. While exploring the various possibilities of this unique medium, the main focus will be “experimenting with a fusion of creative methods”. Team-work and experiencing the process is more important than the final outcome!
All the equipment which is needed for practical work (shooting and animation) will be provided by the organizers. There will be 3 fully equipped animation sets (cameras, tripods, laptops with programs). A printer will be also available. If you have documentary footage, you can bring it with you for pitching. Feel free to bring waste paper (magazines, newspapers etc), pencils and other tools for drawing, painting and coloring (crayons, marker pens etc).
