Starting with a game with the clients, hosted by Ban Ying, Berlin's shelter house and consultant center for women (and transwomen) who have faced human-trafficking.
Bar 21 tells the story of Linda, a naïve bar hostess and sex worker from Bangkok searching for love and acceptance. After being rejected by her exploitative boyfriend, she becomes a key witness to a murder and is pressured to choose between implicating those who have helped her or allowing the murderer to go free in exchange for the promise of a better life. Adapted from Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1946 play The Respectful Prostitute, this Thai musical film draws visual inspiration from Bob Fosse’s Cabaret, reimagining its iconic MC within a Bangkok nightclub during the American Cold War era.
Accompanied by a game activity hosted by Ban Ying, the screening invites reflection on sex work, migration, and dreams of a better life, encouraging us to recognise aspects of Linda’s story within our own experiences. (Sarnt Utamachote)
