The first shorts program explores displacement, memory, family and the ghosts of the past. Les Cascades centres on a young woman confronting the gap between her aspirations of living abroad and its often jarring reality. In Liquor, a daughter attempts to save her mother from an illness that threatens to drown her memories and emotions. ma. offers an intimate portrait of a mother and child, reflecting on memory, silence and the traces of love across time. In The Fissure Of The Red Sight, a search for hidden cameras brings the statues of Taipei New Park to life, confronting the city’s colonial and authoritarian past. Lethe journeys into the underworld of memory, where a sculptor encounters his works and relives moments with his daughter. Finally, Three Things I Learned in France offers a playful reflection on the experience of being Taiwanese in France, and the things that prove more difficult than learning French.
