Set in the Jim Crow Deep South, Sinners draws inspiration from the Robert Johnson legend of selling one's soul for musical prowess. As Delroy Lindo’s character wryly remarks: “White folks like the blues just fine; just not the people who make it.”
Sammie (singer Miles Caton) is a gifted teen blues guitarist and preacher's son whose talent is exploited by his sharp-dressing, gangster cousins, twins Elijah and Elias Smoke. The twins, fresh from Chicago with ill-gotten gains, plan to open a juke joint featuring Sammie. Their venture takes a sinister turn when the twins' ex-lover Mary and menacing country singer Remmick turn up. As night falls, the juke joint comes under supernatural siege by forces of darkness. With comic-book brashness and unapologetic flair, Coogler playfully points to the horrors of racism in America, both then and now.
