Native Dancer
Gulshat Omarova, Kazakhstan, Russia, France, Germany 2008, 87 Min., Kasachisch, Russisch with English subtitles

Aidai, an elderly baksy (traditional healer), tends to the bodies and souls of villagers. When a local businessman erects a gas station and motel on the land she inhabits—and her grandson is abducted—Aidai vanishes, setting off a chain of uncanny reversals. Omarova fuses social drama with a fable to question “modernization” and the fragile ethics of care on the steppe.

Emerging from the post-Soviet landscape, Вокалды параллелдер (Vocal Parallels) and Бақсы (Native Dancer) move between myth and realism, ritual and survival. They reimagine a cinematic space where women act not as symbols of change but as mediators between worlds. Voice, body, and landscape intertwine, carrying the residue of histories that resist resolution and the persistence of lives that continue in their wake. (Malika Mukhamejan)
