A Page of Madness is understood to be the first avant-garde film in the history of Japanese cinema. The film is not driven by narrative but by the aim to depict poetry through images. For many years it was thought to be lost, but in 1971 it was rediscovered in the director's home. It is now one of the most widely screened Japanese silent films outside of Japan. For this installment of Scenes of (Un-)Translatability, the film will be screened in the traditional Japanese way, with Benshi (live narration) by Ichiro kataoka, accompanied by the musician duo saiLento.
