For decades, the concept of the two solitudes shaped Canada's self-perception: two culturally homogeneous societies—Quebec and the English-speaking provinces—isolated from one another. However, since the late 20th century, new self-images have emerged, challenging this simplified view. The voices of formerly marginalized groups have become visible and now shape literature, art, and especially cinema. Contemporary film narratives address Indigenous experiences, migration, queer realities, and the search for identity within complex social structures. As a result, modern Cinéma Québécois presents itself as diverse as the society it reflects.
