In collaboration with Berliner Förderprogramm Künstlerische Forschung, fellow Mykola Ridnyi and Clemens von Wedemeyer layer collective historical narratives with the crossing paths of their personal family histories. Die Pferde des Rittmeisters compresses found footage from a family archive and contemporary commentary into a picture of the second world war. In Grey Horses, present-day anarchists, police officers, students and workers bring to life interrogation records and memories of Ridnyi’s great-grandfather, the Ukrainian anarchist rebel Ivan Krupskyi. The Cast (Procession) departs from the 1958 protests happening during the production of the Hollywood film Ben Hur in the Mussolini-founded Cinecittà studios near Rome. Actors from the occupied Teatro Valle re-enact the events. Ridnyi and von Wedemeyer’s politico-aesthetic explorations serve as the basis for a discussion on the performativity that results from the overlaying of archival material with contemporary re-enactment, commentary and film fiction.

Mykola Ridnyi is an artist, filmmaker and essayist based in Kyiv, Ukraine and currently an Adhoc-Fellow at the Berlin Artistic Research Grant Programme. He works across media, ranging from early political actions in public space to fusing site-specific installations, photography and moving image which constitutes the current focus of his practice.

Clemens von Wedemeyer is an artist and filmmaker and holds a professorship for expanded cinema at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. His films and complex video installations explore the personal and collective history of the 20th century as well as the power and control structures of the present.
