Many Undulating Things
Bo WANG, PAN Lu, Hong Kong, South Korea, USA 2019, 125 Min., English, Cantonese, Mandarin with English subtitles

Waves of Hong Kong

“Colonial air, native plants, botanic empire, segregation, entrepôt, steel-and-glass, shopping malls, memories, laissez-faire, ghost houses, speculation.... many undulating things.” (Words from the directors.)

This geopolitical essay offers a layered reflection on Hong Kong’s identity as a microcosm of globalized capitalism, exploring the intersections of landscape, nature, urbanization, and society. Through its political commentary on Hong Kong’s urban spaces—including shopping centers, concrete jungles, port warehouses, exhibition halls, and tower blocks—we trace the echoes of the city’s colonial past and hear the sounds of a city in motion.
