Xiaohui and His Cows + The Last Moose of Ao Lu Gu Ya

小晖和他的牛 + 犴达罕

Xiaohui and His Cows / Xiaohui he ta de niu(《小晖和他的牛》)
Lao Xinying, China 2022, 15 min. Mandarin with English subtitles

Mountain landscapes and a few other children, the remote village where Xiaohui lives with his grandfather and their two cows has little to offer. Moreover, the nine-year-old sorely misses his parents who work in the city. When his grandfather is forced to sell a calf, Xiaohui tries everything he can to prevent the separation of the baby cow from its mother. A call for love in times of capitalist alienation, the young filmmaker Lao Xinying returned to her hometown to make this poetic portrait of China's left-behind children.

The Last Moose of Ao Lu Gu Ya(《犴达罕》)
Gu Tao, China 2013, 100 min. Mandarin with English subtitles

The Last Moose of Ao Lu Gu Ya follows Weijia, an indigenous Ewenki hunter who feels melancholic and lost in the contemporary world, a place where the Ewenki culture seems to fade away. No longer able to hunt, he drinks, paints and writes poems. When spring arrives, he decides to move back to the mountains and look for traces of moose, an animal closely associated with Ewenki tradition. Yet, when a girl from the city falls in love with Weijia and takes him to Hainan island, his life changes once more.
