Más allá del olvido

Beyond Oblivion
Hugo del Carril, Argentina 1956, 94 Min., Spanish with English subtitles

Introduced by Fernando Madedo

The wealthy Fernando de Arellano loses his young wife Blanca to a fatal illness. After a long period of depression, he meets Mónica who looks identical to Blanca. They get married but, in the meantime, Mónica’s ex-lover and pimp, Luis, plots revenge against her. The film bears striking similarities to Hitchcock films such as ‘Rebecca’ and, in particular, ‘Vertigo’ which was made two years after Hugo del Carril’s film. While, on a narrative level, ‘Beyond Oblivion’ delves into the risks of extreme grief, more generally, the film highlights the pitfalls of asymmetrical film histories and Western-centric canonizations which obscure potential transnational interrelations and influences.

Fernando Madedo is managing director of the Federación Iberoamericana de Productores Cinematográficos y Audiovisuales (FIPCA), the Ibero-American Federation of Film and Audiovisual Producers, as well as president of the Sociedad por el Patrimonio Audiovisual (Society for Audiovisual Heritage) in Buenos Aires and head of its Latam Classics label.
