The film portrays the story of the Telangana uprising, which escalated between 1944 and 1946 in the princely state of Hyderabad, India. At the heart of this epic adaptation of Krishan Chander’s novella is the landless farmer Ramayya, who refuses to accept the oppressive conditions of the time. Ramayya embarks on a transformative journey from a simple, illiterate laborer struggling with hunger to becoming a communist agitator and guerrilla fighter. Goutam Ghose’s exploration of this chapter in Indian history is closely tied to the contemporary social conditions in India, particularly the famine of 1974, which mirrored the severity of the 1943 famine in Hyderabad.
