Bu İkiliye Dikkat (Watch Out For This Duo)

Chosen by Şokopop
Şahin Gök, Türkiye 1985, 74 Min., Turkish with English subtitles

A light-hearted drama set in a holiday resort in southern Turkey, Watch Out For This Duo follows the parallel stories of two women from very different social backgrounds: one an unhappy young woman from a wealthy family, the other a poor woman pretending to be rich. A unique and experimental camp hit of 1980s Turkish cinema, it is the first and last film to bring together two major female stars and notorious rivals — Banu Alkan and Serpil Çakmaklı — in the same frame.

For their DEEP CUTS evening, Şokopop, aka Ekim Acun, will present a feature-length film on stage for the first time, narrated through their distinctive style that misses none of the details hidden behind the 1980s camp classic Bu İkiliye Dikkat. Filled with bikinis and tight swim briefs, pounding Comanchero, and performative “bitchiness”, expect a night of heat in the middle of a cold Berlin winter.

Şokopop became an online phenomenon in Türkiye after publishing their archive- and research-based work dedicated to Turkish pop and gossip culture on YouTube — today reaching more than 260,000 subscribers. The channel primarily features video essays, thematic compilations, and narrated content focusing on Turkish pop music, film and television history, arabesk, disco, and diasporic cultures. These videos approach popular music and television not merely as entertainment, but as a cultural archive deeply intertwined with collective memory, class relations, and everyday life. A fondness for camp and bad taste, as well as a keen interest in Turkey’s peculiar social and political conditions, is always palpable in their work.

Ekim Zafer Acun (b. 1988, Tunceli) studied Cinema and Television at Roma Tre University and the University of the Arts London: London College of Communication. As a visual artist, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in London and Istanbul.

In 2018, he founded Şokopop, a research-based platform exploring memory, gender, and identity through the history of Turkey’s popular culture. Through documentaries, performances and video works, Acun continues to examine sexuality, representation, and censorship from a queer perspective.
