In cooperation with Deutschen Kinemathek: Losers & Winners - Gerhard Lamprecht Reihe
With an introduction by Florian Wüst
Berlin 1946: Amidst a landscape of rubble, children are playing war again. Among them are the two friends Gustav and Willi. While Gustav waits with his mother for his father to return, Willi lives with a widow and helps the con man Birke with his crooked business. When Gustav's father returns home, he is paralyzed and unable to help with the reconstruction. He becomes the neighborhood's laughing stock. To help his friend, Willi steals a food parcel and embarks on a test of courage that ends in tragedy. Written and shot by director Gerhard Lamprecht for DEFA in 1946, the film traces whether and how something new can emerge from the social and urban landscapes of ruins. It explores generational conflict, capitulation, reconstruction and mere survival, and adds a new image to the myth of Berlin as a resilient city that is constantly reinventing itself. Somewhere in Berlin is part of the Gerhard Lamprecht series Losers & Winners. Between 18th and 24th November, 50 years after his death, the Deutsche Kinemathek is inviting audiences to rediscover his work with five selected films in six Berlin cinemas. A fresh look will be taken at themes such as class, milieu, urbanity and mobility. (FW)
