Found Future #6: Voices from Exile

An event in cooperation with Goethe im Exil.

With Eiman Hussein, Talal Afifi, Erica Carter, Ismat Amiralai, Khalid Abdulwahed, Viola Stephan, Fazel Jamil Hashimi, Mohammad Fayaz Lutfi and Hasibullah Sediqi, moderated by Stefanie Schulte Strathaus.

In the summer of 2023, the Sudanese Film and Television Archive was occupied by the Rapid Support Forces, and the archive's holdings were (presumably) lost. The Sudanese Film Group, now in exile in Cairo, along with the British Film Institute, Eiman Hussein, Talal Afifi, and Erica Carter, discuss this situation. The work in exile of Syrian director Omar Amiralai, whose estate is held at Arsenal, is discussed by his brother Ismat Amiralai, filmmaker Khalid Abdulwahed and writer Viola Stephan. Afghan film archivists Fazel Jamil Hashimi, Mohammad Fayaz Lutfi and Hasibullah Sediqi talk about the archive they had to leave behind after the Taliban took power in Afghanistan.

The Sudanese Film Group was founded by Eltayeb Mahdi, Ibrahim Shaddad, and Suliman Elnour in 1989.

Eiman Hussein is the daughter of Hussein Shariffe, a filmmaker closely associated with the Sudanese Film Group.

Talal Afifi is a Sudanese film curator and producer.

Erica Carter is Professor of German and Film at King's College London.

Ismat Amiralai is a calligrapher living in Germany since 1960.

Khalid Abdulwahed is a Syrian photographer, filmmaker and artist.

Viola Stephan is a documentary filmmaker.

Fazel Jamil Hashimi, Mohammad Fayaz Lutfi and Hasibullah Sediqi are film archivists from Afghanistan currently in exile in Germany.
