New Wave

A vibrant exploration of the Vietnamese-American music scene that emerged in California during the 1980s, New Wave traces how a generation of young refugees and their children forged identity through synth-pop, fashion, and nightlife in the aftermath of war and displacement. Combining rare archival footage with a deeply personal family story, director Elizabeth Ai uses the subculture as a lens through which to examine inherited trauma, diasporic identity, and the search for connection across fractured histories.
