BAFNET: Familiar Places

Mala Reinhardt, Germany 2024, 94 Min., German with English subtitles

In cooperation with BAFNET

Followed by a talk with Mala Reinhardt

Queer, Ghanaian-German, polyamory and the desire for a child: protagonist Akosua is accompanied for three years by her friend, filmmaker Mala Reinhardt, on her journey through Germany and Ghana. Together they experience the highs and lows of a life full of longings, relationships and personal growth. While Akosua is still thinking about how she can make her wish for a child come true, Mala becomes pregnant during filming. “In the past, I had no words for my identity,” says Mala in the film. “As a ‘Person of Color,’ ‘BIPOC,’ I first encountered these terms in my twenties. And even then, I couldn’t decide whether I was seen as German or not. That decision is made by others, simply based on my appearance.” (BAFNET)

Mala Reinhardt works as a director and producer of documentary films. In her cinematic work, Mala focuses primarily on untold stories from migrant and feminist perspectives.

The Berlin Asian Film Network (BAFNET) e.V. is a discrimination-critical initiative pushing for diverse, nuanced representations of Asian-German lives in film and TV. We support young BIPOC filmmakers by building networks and creating space for their stories – especially in curated diasporic settings.
