Workshop: Decolonial and Feminist Approaches to Film Writing and Curating

Applications to participate in the workshop here. Limited capacity. Application until September 20th, 2025

Using the example of Central Asian filmmaking, this workshop examines film criticism and curatorial writing through feminist and decolonial frameworks, such as bell hooks's approach. Together with Malika Mukhamejan, filmmaker and curator from Kazakhstan, we will explore how these methodologies transform cinema analysis and discuss the manifestation of power in curatorial practices. The focus lies in critically reassessing dominant discourses in film.

The workshop creates a space to question dominant ways of seeing. It addresses researchers, curators, critics, and anyone interested in the alternative film discourse.

Malika Mukhamejan is a curator and filmmaker. Her work elevates diverse voices in Central Asian cinema, exploring women’s representation, and fostering community through film. She is the founder of Qyzqaras, an Almaty-based film festival dedicated to female filmmaking
