Nome

Sana Na N’Hada, France, Portugal, Angola 2023, 118 Min., Guinea-Bissau Creole, Portuguese with English subtitles

Directed by Sana Na N’Hada, a key figure of Guinean cinema and a former independence fighter, Nome is an essayistic documentary that revisits Guinea-Bissau's revolutionary past through its endangered film archive. Returning to the derelict national film institute in Bissau, Na N’Hada confronts decaying reels of footage he helped shoot decades earlier, using the material traces of cinema to interrogate the unfulfilled promises of liberation, the politics of memory, and the silence that has followed the revolutionary era. The film weaves personal recollection, archival restoration, and conversations with fellow veterans into a lyrical and haunting meditation on how a nation's history is preserved, forgotten, or reclaimed.
