Die Mörder sind unter uns

It was the first German film of the post-war period after World War II. Set amid the actual ruins of Berlin, the story revolves around a war criminal in hiding whose crimes have not been forgotten by another man. At the same time, it is a portrait of the respectable German bourgeois who refuses to comprehend his own guilt. The film became a classic. It also speaks to our present and to the fragility of democracy under threat.

Ulrike Weckel studied history and is a professor of specialized journalism and history in the media at the university Gießen.

Angelika Nguyen studied Film Dramaturgy and Film History at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Babelsberg, GDR. She is a staff member at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.

Ulrike Imhof is a staff member at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. There she is in charge of coordinating the educational program “Fight Against the Far Right.”

Presented as part of the DEFA-ANTIFA, a curated film program and thematic focus dedicated to the antifaschistische Schaffenslinie (antifascist creative line) of the former East German state film studio, DEFA.
