Zanzibar in the 1950s, in the final phase of the British colonial era. Denge, a young freedom fighter from the mainland, and his comrades roam the island metropolis of Stone Town, pursued by the colonial police, distribute socialist pamphlets and stage riots in dance halls and expat clubs to demand political autonomy. One night, Denge meets Yasmin, an upper-class Indian-Sansibari woman. The two embark on a romance with far-reaching consequences. (A)

Amil Shivji was born in Tanzania and studied Fine Arts at York University in Toronto. His debut feature film T-Junction (2017) opened the Zanzibar International Film Festival and won three awards. His latest production Tug of War was named best feature film at the Mashariki African Film Festival in Rwanda and won the Oumarou Ganda Prize at FESPACO 2021.
