The Lions By The River Tigris
Zaradasht Ahmed, Norway, Netherlands, Iraq 2025, 92 Min., Arabic with English subtitles

The liberation of Mosul after years of control under ISIS has left the historic city in rubble. As its inhabitants return to the ruins to glean whatever is left of their previous existences, ideals begin to clash. Fakhri, an eccentric antiques collector, becomes enamored with the elaborate lion marble arch that adorns fisherman Bashar's historic childhood home. As Fakhri attempts to acquire it by any means possible, Bashar must decide between retaining his heritage and securing his financial future.

The Lions By The River Tigrisexplores the tragic state of Mosul's historic center through a memorable cast of protagonists. Equal measures hilarious and heartbreaking, each must navigate their own plans for the remains of the city's rich legacy. The film has participated in several international film festivals, including Doc NYC and DOK Leipzig. (Marc Bogoslaw)
