Berlin Asian Film Network (BAFNET) in cooperation with Dreh’s Um
19:00: INDOOR screening with German and Vietnamese subtitles
21:30: OPEN AIR screening with English subtitles
BAFNET and Dreh’s Um invite you to a special film evening featuring six short documentaries that explore the realities of Vietnamese-German life in a personal way. The films take viewers on a profound journey through Vietnamese-German identities. In personal and poetic images, they tell stories of migration, family, and the complex search for home. The films were created as part of the Dreh's Um Academy, a one-year support initiative for young filmmakers with a migration background. The documentaries not only reflect individual perspectives and collective experiences, but also serve as a creative springboard into the German film and media landscape.
BAFNET and Dreh's Um share the common goal of making marginalized voices visible in German film culture and creating spaces for self-representation, exchange, and networking. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers.
“On the one hand, it’s about making films, and on the other, it’s about empowering people to take control of their own perspective, to pick up the camera themselves and, in a figurative sense, point it at themselves – away from the white, often stereotypical view of our community. We have to turn the tables and decide for ourselves what we want to tell and how we want to tell it.”–Đức Ngô Ngọc
With films by Huy Nguyen (Zuhause ist dort, wo die sternfrüchte Sauer sind), Lan Mi Lê (Dunkelblau wie ich mich Fühle & Motherland), Hien Nguyen & Mani Pham Bui (Alles gehört zu dir), Jasmin Phan (Wohnen auf Zeit), and Melanie Nguyen (Erst Nachts konnten wir traurig sein).
Dreh’s Um is a participatory production company committed to the sustainable and diverse promotion of German short films and young filmmakers. It consists of three central areas: the Dreh’s Um Academy, Dreh’s Um Coaching, and Dreh’s Um Productions.
The Berlin Asian Film Network (BAFNET) e.V. connects people who are interested in films about Asia and the Asian Diaspora. Our mission is to raise awareness of under- and misrepresentation of the Asian Diaspora in the German media. We promote young independent filmmakers by organizing open network meetings (Stammtisch) and short-film screenings including talks with the filmmakers.
